FEBRUARY 26: Tailored Treatments: Compounding for Companion and Exotic Animals

SPEAKER: Scott Denney, PharmD

Compounding plays a vital role in providing individualized therapy for veterinary patients, particularly when commercial products are unavailable or unsuitable.

This session explores the unique considerations involved in compounding medications for both companion and exotic animals, including formulation challenges, species-specific pharmacology, and regulatory compliance. Participants will gain practical insight into selecting appropriate dosage forms, ensuring product stability, and maintaining safety for both patients and handlers. The presentation will also highlight real-world case examples and collaboration strategies between pharmacists and veterinary professionals to optimize therapeutic outcomes across species.

MARCH 12: Interpreting Certificates of Analysis for Accurate Compounding

SPEAKERS: Vanessa Pinheiro, BS Pharm, MSc and Matthew Johnson

This presentation provides a step-by-step approach to interpreting Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) to ensure accurate pharmaceutical compounding. It focuses on practical calculation examples using assay values, water content, and loss on drying, as well as converting from salt forms to base equivalents when applicable.

Participants will learn how to apply CoA data to determine the correct amount of active ingredient, perform drug dilution calculations, and recognize common sources of compounding error.

This session also covers how to interpret antibiotic monographs, with emphasis on understanding potency expressions and how they impact final concentration and dosing before preparing compounded formulations.

The Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Foundations of Pharmacy Compounding
15-Hour Compounding Foundations Course

Earning their trust takes more than your technical expertise. It’s equally important that patients know that you and your teammates have an essential understanding of the laws, regulations, and policies that govern pharmacy compounding. That you operate in compliance with those rules. It’s critical for compounding well.

But you can't comply with rules and regulations that you don't know.
