Drug shortages? Compounding pharmacies are there to help

No doubt we’re all aware of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting shortages of medical supplies — and that includes some medications. But did you know that compounding pharmacies fill a critical gap when there are manufacturing shortages or supply chain interruptions?

One of the drugs in shortage now is hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), because of the belief that it might help treat Covid-19. But that puts patients who require HCQ for other conditions at risk. Compounding pharmacists are helping. After all, they specialize in making custom doses when normally commercially available products are on backorder, so patients are able to continue their treatment without interruption.

Also in shortage is alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Due to these unprecedented circumstances, the FDA is allowing compounding pharmacies to make their own. Compounders across the country have stepped up and have been answering that call; through a campaign called #CompoundingHandoff, many are donating hand sanitizers to police and first responders who are in desperate need.

Should you have trouble finding your commercially made medications, hand sanitizer, or immune boosting vitamin supplements, please consider contacting a compounding pharmacist near you. They’re happy to help you with your health concerns, especially during this difficult time.
