Texas cracks down on elective IVs. A new law in Texas that medical spas and “drip centers” are supposed to follow says that only PAs, RNs, and APRNs including NPs can administer elective IV therapy — and only when under “adequate” supervision by a physician. Wondering how this might affect compounding? APC is developing a best-practices document for this very situation — we’ll be releasing it soon.

Pencol hosts freshman congressman. Newly elected Congressman Gabe Evans of Colorado — who sits on the influential House Energy and Commerce Committee — visited Revelation Pharma’s Pencol Pharmacy in Denver on August 21. Evans and his district director spent an hour touring the pharmacy, discussing a range of issues from insurance issues and workforce development to, perhaps most importantly, the role compounding plays in addressing drug shortages.

Thank you to Rep. Hamadeh! A big high-five to Congressman Abe Hamadeh of Arizona who sent a formal inquiry to FDA Commissioner Martin Makary. Hamadeh wants to know (as do we, frankly) why the agency suddenly banned compounding with desiccated thyroid extract, despite millions of patients finding natural DTE to be more effective than synthetic versions. “Hamadeh emphasized the concerns of his constituents, particularly the veterans and seniors in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, who rely on desiccated thyroid medications for effective treatment.”

You’re invited to the OKC regional meeting. If you’re in Oklahoma, Kansas, or Texas, you’ll want to check out APC’s regional meeting in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, September 30. It includes dinner, networking time, a tour of the ARL Bio Pharma lab, a compounding policy update, and one hour of law CE — all of that 100% free thanks to our generous sponsors, ARL and Kalchem. Free CE webinar on IDing bugs. It’s not good enough to identify a microorganism accurately — that ID needs to meet USP <1113> standards. Good thing there’s a (free!) one-hour CE webinar coming up: “Are You Sure About That ID? Ensuring Microbial Identification Meets USP Standards” that will cover USP <797> and <1113> standards and help keep you compliant … and your patients safer. It’s Tuesday, September 23 at 1:00 pm EDT and comes courtesy of ARL Bio Pharma.
