APC, NJPhA weigh in on GLP-1 access
This week the New Jersey Assembly Health Committee held a nearly three-hour hearing on the safety, affordability, and accessibility of GLP-1 medications. The committee heard from industry, physicians, a free clinic, a patient advocate, and pharmacists, and explored the differences among FDA-approved drugs, supplements marketed with GLP-1 claims, lawful compounding, and illicit research-use-only products.
Pharmacy representatives included NJPhA President Svet Milic, RPh, of Colonia Pharmacy and APC member Viral Jani of Town & Country Compounding, both APC members. They supported strong enforcement against counterfeit and illicit sellers while preserving lawful, patient-specific compounding. As a NJPhA leader put it, “Counterfeiting is fraud. Lawful compounding is pharmacy practice.” The pharmacy panel also addressed ingredient sourcing from FDA-registered establishments, USP standards, and the limits on compounding copies once shortages resolve.
APC and NJPhA submitted joint written comments, and Chairwoman Carol A. Murphy signaled interest in continued conversations with stakeholders.
Thank you to Svet and Viral for representing the profession. Listen to the hearing here.
