Here’s looking at you, kid

Last year, APC worked with the Center for Business Research at the University of Mary Washington, polling 16,500 compounders across America about their businesses: prescriptions, employment, outsourcing, demographics, concerns, and more.

We received replies from every geographic and practice area, and the result is the most detailed profile of pharmacy compounding in years: “A Snapshot of Pharmacy Compounding in America.”

It paints the clearest picture available — one we can share with policymakers, patients, and media to inform them about the profession.

A few fast facts from the Snapshot:

  • The median 503A compounding pharmacy dispenses 350 compounded prescriptions a week, and serves 150 different prescribers.
  • The top compounding therapy they dispensed in the past two years? Hormone replacement therapy. What was number two? Veterinary medications. (GLP-1s were #3.)
  • What about staff? The median 503A pharmacy employs 15 people, and the median outsourcing facility employs 30 … and half (51%) increased staff or hours just to meet GLP-1 demand.

There’s a lot more. The point is, the snapshot is a tool to provide a solid background and understanding of compounding, making it perfect for sharing with policymakers, media, prescribers, and anyone else who could benefit from a primer on the practice.

Check out (and download) the full snapshot here — and be sure to share it and use the information in it to, you know, inform people.

The data are based on APC’s 2025 member survey, and the project was made possible in part with the generous support of Fagron, Medisca, and PCCA.
