We’ve been talking a lot about the Safeguarding Americans from Fraudulent and Experimental Drugs Act — i.e., the bogus, drugmaker-authored SAFE Act, which the rumor mill suggests has gained some steam. It’s a drugmaker-supported bill that in reality does nothing at all to Safeguard Americans from Fraudulent and Experimental Drugs. The bill would impose unnecessary limits on 503A compounding. How about virtually eliminating the ability of pharmacists to compound medications that are in shortage? Yep. Told you it was drugmaker supported.
APC and our friends at NCPA sent a letter to members of Congress expressing and detailing our opposition to the bill, starting with its (misleading) title and then explaining that…
“[T]he legislation does nothing to address problems associated with fraudulent or experimental drugs while insulting and maligning the thousands of legitimate state licensed pharmacies and FDA registered outsourcing facilities serving critical patient needs.”
But writing a letter, even a strongly worded and detailed one, can only take us so far. What we need is to be face to face with the senators and representatives who will be voting on the SAFE Act.
And that’s why it’s so important to attend Compounders on Capitol Hill — to be live and in the room with as many of these legislators as possible. Nothing will send our message better than talking with them, in person, and explaining why pharmacy compounding means so much to their constituents.
If nothing else, it’s about making sure the big drug companies don’t control the narrative.
